Hi, I am Shelly!
My passion for cooking began at a young age as I sat at my grandmother's kitchen table, watching her prepare cakes for Sunday service and meals for Sunday dinner. Family and friends would gather at her house after worship for a home-cooked meal prepared by Miss Rose.
Throughout my culinary journey, I have been fortunate to have numerous mentors, primarily through the families of my friends. I frequently found myself in the kitchen alongside my friends' parents, observing their techniques and absorbing their knowledge. One of my most cherished experiences was learning to cook Asian and Filipino cuisine. While my friends engaged in typical adolescent activities, I dedicated my time to learning from my best friend Liz's father, Francisco (Frank) acquiring valuable skills in the process.
As an adult, I have traveled to places like Mexico, Atlanta, Texas, New Orleans, and most recently, the Hawaiian Islands, to explore the local cuisine. I consider my cooking to be a fusion of world flavors, drawing inspiration from various cultures and making it my own. I strive for quality, precision, and affordability in my meals, aiming to create dishes that evoke the comfort of a Sunday dinner.
Inspired by these experiences and a lifelong love for cooking, I created The Sugar Shak—a place where comfort meets creativity. Through our meal delivery and catering services, as well as our custom cakes, I’m proud to share the same warmth and flavor that once filled my grandmother’s kitchen.
